Fall in love with your backyard! This Newport Beach property went from small to charming – embracing the look and feel of classic country living. The secret to a commanding landscape? One part innovation, two parts European tradition, with a dash of regal appeal. Enhance your yard without disrupting its natural essence. Feast on a taste of the tropics, while maintaining a sizeable space for eating, entertaining, or just plain living! This backyard environment was styled after a classic grecian theme complimenting a newly remodeled 1940's circa mediterranean villa in Newport Beach. Winning Gold at the 2006 APSP International Awards of Excellence, this environment is designed for entertaining a large, extended family highlighted with separate pour cantilever coping in a "Swoop" style for relaxation in the centered spa.

The 2004 NSPI Silver Design Award winner, this Laguna Niguel home was blessed with a generous, open space protected by a steep hillside. Broad, sweeping walkways and stone risers subtly break the islands housing the spa, sun deck and fire pit. A gently sloping beach entry and understated waterfalls suggest a tropical lagoon. The pool area is accented with several varieties of stone, natural brushed concrete and blue Pebblecoat, and finished with Swan landscaping. This contemporary Laguna Niguel home had a sweeping vista, but little room to move. We solved the problem with elegant geometry. A perfectly proportioned rectangular pool leaves ample entertainment space. Smooth white plaster and textured interlocking paving provide textural contrast. The precise arcs of six pencil-thin fountains make it a work of art. The 2003 NSPI Bronze Award winner, this intimate creation was inspired by the natural majesty of a palm grove in the corner of a Laguna Niguel property. Great columns of trees frame a waterfall of real stone, cascading into an organically shaped spa surrounded by Three Rivers stone hardscape. Here, a simple, sloping Laguna Niguel yard is transformed into a terraced paradise with an Asian influence. A blue Pebblecoat plaster creates two jewels in a sculptured setting of Red Mountain stone. Between them, a spillway fountain creates hypnotic sound and motion. In this dramatic entertainment space, a towering fireplace overlooks an attached spa and pool. Classically simple, geometric shapes are warmed by the earth tones of stucco, tile and brick. In the evening, the effect is magical.

In this Tustin home, guests can wander between the warmth of a fire ring and the cool pleasures of a spa and pool, walking across a stone deck to concrete surfaces with stamped and natural, brushed textures. Organic architectural shapes are complemented by a casual Swan Pools landscape design. High on a hill overlooking the Newport Coast, water cascades through an intimate grotto, sculpted from stone that is both natural and artificial. The judges of the 2004 NSPI Design Awards felt the effect was entirely natural, and awarded it the Bronze medal. The unique feature of this property is its spectacular Anaheim Hills vista, and our design begins with the panorama. Simple geometry frames the view in natural stone. A stone path and discreet, low waterfalls draw the eye to the horizon. Swan Pools landscaping completes the effect. The quiet elegance of charcoal gray stone belies the exuberant playfulness of this design. Under the pool's surface are love seats. Across from the fire ring, behind the massive grotto, a waterslide slithers to the water's surface. We surrounded this cheerful creation with a brushed, colored concrete hardscape and casual landscaping. This lush garden features large, mature trees throughout. We created a grotto and waterfall that seems to flows naturally from a forest into the quartz blue pool, capturing the dappled light spilling through the trees. The pool and spa are surrounded by artificial stone and stone veneer with colored, brushed concrete.

The casual pool and spa is easy on the eye and the soul. It features relaxed, freestyle forms and quiet but complex pastel colors and textures. The pool's surface is pure white plaster; the hardscape and coping are decorative slate. Climb to the top of the grotto, beside the waterfall, and slide down to the pool. Swim up to the bar. Stroll across the bridge and sweep your legs into the spa. Slip back into the pool, under the spray of a sculpted dolphin fountain. In this Villa Park property, every day seems like a vacation. In this Napa Valley property, two dramatic curtains of water reflect the topography of the surrounding hills. They cascade before an abstract mural of stone veneer, down into a geometric basin surfaced in midnight blue. This pool has a timeless quality, as if it had been here for centuries. Here, we are inspired by the classic swimming hole. Sculpted with generous quantities of genuine Red Mountain river rock and surrounded by irrigated planters, this Stockton property has the look, the feel and the sound of a riverside hollow - a pool that Huck Finn might have designed. An ordinary backyard becomes a meditative sanctuary, with clean, pure lines and simple shapes. The surfaces are natural stone veneer and scoured concrete, with a simple gray plaster in the pool and spa. The eye is drawn to two shallow spillways - the only movement in a serene landscape.
